blog #2

In looking at all the characters in the stories that we have read so far, I feel that the chancellor has allowed me to tell the difference between modernism and postmodernism. I feel this way, because someone with a modern perspective would believe that there is an 'absolute' truth. The chancellor believed that there was absolutly no God, and anyone that thought differently would be liquidated. He was very firm in that nothing existed beyond what his senses perceived. When the librarian challenged him, the chancellor deemed him obsolete becuase as a librarian, he was useless. Modernism also is based very highly on high and low culture, in that those in the high culture are always right. this is again portrayed when the librarian challenges the chancellor. Since the chancellor's place in society is higher than the librarians, the chancellor is able to override anyhting that he says, and punish him by killing him. In the end, when the librarian tricks the chancellor to come into the room where the bomb is going to go off, the chancellor says in the end "In the name of God, let me out of here!" Even though this line would prove him to be a dynamic character instead of static, it allowed me to see the transistion of a modern person to postmodern, which is why i am choosing this character as the one that has enlightened my understanding of the differences.

I chose to put this painting on my blog becuase i really like the symbolism. It is titled "Suicide By Modernism." It portrays a person being hung along with paintings, sculptures, and other forms of art under the American Flag. I think that this really goes along with The Obsolete Man becuase a man that has no use (the librarian) would be put to death along with his books (his form of art) because he did not believe what the higher society did.
